i've realized...
i've realized something... and bear with me because i'm going to stereotype very badly here. i have realized that for the most part i dislike "small town girls." well maybe not "dislike" but they annoy the shit out of me. this is entirely superficial but i can't think of any other way to put it... they wear their hair the same way, wear the same jeans, the same shoes, and carry variations of the same purse. what is the world coming to? what happened to being original and wanting something for the sole reason that no body else has it? Phoenixville High School was crawling with them, and if i may assume, these clones still infest the halls of my high school. what's the deal? there are mounds of bad and fake-looking highlights or completely bleached hair that is straightened and burned until the you can actually see split ends and fly-aways from at least five feet away. they wear logo-t-shirts straight from hollister, american eagle, or abercrombie that may say something clever like "wink." on their neck and wrist is the complete set of matching chain bracelet and necklace with the heart charm and their initials engraved on the back from tiffany & co that their boyfriend of 2 years bought them. this relationship, however, is built on lies and at least one party involved cheats on the other at least once a month. their jeans... every different shade of blue jean from american eagle. usually 98% cotton and 2% spandex so they can fit them extra tight. maybe once a week if they want to be different or clever, they'll sport a jean skirt that is probably from abercrombie kids because it's short enough where they will be feeling a draft up their ass all goddamn day. yes, and it's winter. moving right along to shoes... the "small town girls" of my high school wore diesel sneakers, new balance sneakers, or black boots (usually square toed and thick heeled). although the infamous and oh-so-ugly Ugg boots were in style last year, only one girl had them and they weren't even the Ugg brand, they were some knock-offs. however, now that the Uggly style boot is so ubiquitous that even american eagle sells a version of them, i'm sure every girl at the high school has them. and lastly, the handbag. ahh, the handbag. well let's just say that designer print is all the rage. My hated, printed enemies Dooney, Louie, Coach, Chanel and Prada. Although a few girls had the real deals, most of them were bought from a flea market called Rice's. that place needs to be shut down immediately. it feeds the monster that is the high school girl fashion. and you know what? it's not even high school either because although i haven't met anyone at NYU that dresses this way, i happen to know that those girls from high school still have the same style. anyway, to bring this to a close, i don't understand why any person would want to have a generic style. is it because they don't care? do they not want to break away from the norm because they just want to fit in? another example of how naive these people are is that since i've been home on break, at least 3 people have asked me or my brother about me studying fashion at NYU... okay NYU does not have a fashion program. the closest they have i'm assuming is costume design in Tisch. just because i didn't dress like a clone in high school and instead of wearing newbalance sneakers, i wore stilettos, does not mean that i want to be a fashion designer. moral of the story is... try to be at least a little bit unique. if you find yourself carrying a designer print purse, switch it up with a more urban look or dress it up with a classic jean and blazer. and for the love of god (MELISSA THIS IS FOR YOU) throw away your goddamn Uggs...
